You're definitely in the right section to address this concern. Few questions that need to be addressed. First, what's the name of the school and is it public, private, parochial, or Christian? All this matters in as far as the rules and guideline as concerned. Things such as "meet me at the flagpole," having prayer teams in the school, having Christian clubs within the school, and or having Christian parents and supporters volunteer to do things at the school. Our high school allows parents, boosters, and people that want to volunteer their service at the school to do so after they go to the school district and give up the finger prints and await the results of the background check. Anyone that has to be alone with our students "MUST" get a background check.

Getting the local churches involved and partnering with the school and parents will also go a long way to strengthen school's attendance. After the attendance rectifies, what's next? How are we going to encourage parents, teachers, students, administration, etc... that the students will do work? The teachers will use tactics and structures that will allow students every opportunity to success via "HOT" (Higher Order Thinking).

Take it to God in prayer and have all come together at a certain time on this website and with you local churches to pray for this school. We must not only pray but pray with wholeheartedness. We must surrender to Christ and not do things through our own resources.

I am always in prayer for the youth. and I am in agreement in prayer for our Children In the Holy name of Jesus our Savior.

Sumner High is a public school. The principal appears to be open to all ideas. It will be necessary to get local churches involved. We need to know more of the 'HOT' program.

Great ideas that need mentioning to see what is currently in place and what can be newly implemented.
"HOT" stands for Higher Order Thinking. When we ask questions the correct way it ensures that the child is learning. We in education, just like us in the Ministry must use this process to ensure that learning is accomplished. In both areas, people will be better prepared, confident, and prepared for further learning. When the child don't appear to know the answer, we cannot immediately look to someone else, silence is good, thinking is great, and providing the right answer is critical. Furthermore, it shows the learner that will will not allow them to not participate, will not allow them to be dumb, will not allow them to stay afraid but will encourage them to learn and enjoy the learning process.
TEACHER BUY-IN is critical. Perhaps we can have a three hour Saturday seminar for the teachers to ignite their desired teacher approach. Included would be interactive sessions with questionnaires that probe the current mindset and methods of the teachers, Activities and examples that encourage and promote the Higher Order Thinking method, Joyce Epstien's Framework of Six Types of Involvement as well as the Kagan concepts. Semi-professional multimedia presentations, mentors, voices of students, and even fellowship through entertainment that promotes engaging radical right-now changes for the futures of these students. We could consider inviting P.T.A. members as well.

ST. LOUIS — To stay open next year, staff at the historic Sumner High must get 40 more students to school every day. It must start a parent-teacher organization, recruit nearly 70 parents, trim student suspensions by 40, and expulsions by 15.

Dozens, if not hundreds more students must pass their classes. And 100 percent of the eligible seniors must graduate.

Teachers and staff met at the start of last week to formulate school-wide goals for the second semester. If they don't meet them, the school will be slated to close.

St. Louis Public School Superintendent Kelvin Adams is expected to present the measures to his school board at tonight's meeting.

He said the task was possible, but difficult. "We're talking about braking mid-year, turning around, changing the culture," he said Wednesday. "We have to make our schools better."

ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) - The long storied history of Sumner High School may now rest in the hands of volunteers. About a dozen showed up this morning to mentor and work with the school's 500 plus students. District superintendent Kelvin Adams has vowed to close the school if attendance doesn't improve.

More than seventy volunteers have signed up. Most will start later this week.

This is not a pretty picture going on in this school. There are many things that can be done to stop or slow down this process. The most important is getting the teachers to buy-in on the notion that they need to be more flexible to teaching strategies that will foster learning, encourage more student participation and and ownership, as well as willing not to do business as usual. They must create and participate in learning communities and look into award-winning teaching structures that companies like Kagan offers.

AS far as attendance is concerned, you may look at paying students incentives for attendance. In our school we were having problems with students attending Algebra classes. We went to the school board with the proposal of paying students $25.00 a quarter for perfect attendance in those classes. Our grades improved tremendously as attendance rose.

Your inputs are indeed "Doctorial!" - meaning wise and pivotal - I am looking forward to what more you will address.
I'm loving what I'm reading about the Kagan concepts like:
"Because the Kagan structures are not a new educational program, but rather a more efficient way to deliver any educational program, they make an enduing positive transformation of the lives of both students and teachers."

Currently, the school's strategy is building around Dr. Joyce Epstein's Framework of Six Times of Involvement as presented to the National Child Care Information Center, Washington, DC. (NCCIC). Certainly, gleaning the best practices of various methods should offer pointed insight to our efforts. Keep it coming Doc!

The 'ram in the bush' for SAVING SUMNER has been spotted, even in this discussion. An experienced outside agency has even knocked on the door to assist. Attached are basic research documents pertaining to this subject. Now, with the faith of a kingdom empowered conquerer, we wait to see if God will move on the hearts and minds of the Sumner staff to consider these options. If so, behold, a miraculous community transformation is about to be occur in 'the Ville" through the humble servants of God for the glory of out mighty God, even through this effort.
