Throughout the country, communities have popped up that are purposely detached from modern society's technology, high speeds and heavy pressures.
Some have stepped back in time, choosing to burn wood for heat, grow their own food and rely on candles for light. Others exist communally, sharing houses, cars and even money. Most are über-earth-conscious, tapping sunlight, wind and water for their energy and building some of their homes from packed soil, old tires and other materials.
Here are 10 villages unconnected to — or soon to be unhinged from — municipal power networks. These are separate, carefully crafted little worlds within the U.S.
